Chapulines (grasshoppers) are a classic Mexican food - often served on their own as a snack or in a wrap as part of a main meal. Although it might seem like an unusual filling, we have used our zingy Herdez Yucatan Tacos Kit to create deliciously crunchy tacos which is sure to convert any doubters!

  • 1 Herdez Yucatan Tacos Kit

For the Yucatan crickets:

  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 15g caster sugar
  • 100g plain roasted crickets
  • Zest of ½ lime

For the tacos:

  • About 2 tsp olive oil
  • 1 red onion, very thinly sliced
  • 1 red pepper, very thinly sliced
  • 1 green pepper, very thinly sliced
  • 100ml reduced-fat sour cream
  • Juice of ½ a lime

  1. For the Yucatan crickets: in a medium-sized frying pan set over a medium heat, add the oil, sugar and ⅓ pack Herdez Yucatan Seasoning. Heat for about 2-3 minutes, stirring until combined. Add the crickets and stir to coat in the seasoning. Stir in the lime zest, and remove from the heat.
  2. For the tacos: in a separate medium-sized frying pan set over a medium heat, add the oil, onion, peppers and remaining ⅔ pack Herdez Yucatan Seasoning. Sauté for 5-10 minutes - or until the vegetables have slightly softened - stirring occasionally.
  3. Heat the Tacos according to packet instructions. Set a warm taco onto a plate, add a spoonful of sour cream and spread in an even layer. Top with the pepper mix, followed by the spiced crickets. Drizzle with the Salsa Verde and squeeze over a little lime juice, to taste. Wrap and enjoy!
